| here's my two cents:
ethan was manipulative. i think the relationship was a great thing for jack because it was his first experience on any kind of gay level but, overall, ethan was just trying to work through HIS issues by using jack. i think he portrayed sincere feelings for jack but ultimately he was trying to convince himself that it was ok to be gay publically even before the whole prom incident. i don't doubt that ethan challenged jack emotionally and maybe even intellectually but the relationship was too premature to go anywhere.
i liked tobey. i thought he was a great opposite of jack and at the same time completely complimented jack's character. he was totally ok with himself and who he was. you saw vulnerability in both characters throughout the relationship and the strength the other had for that character's insecurities (jack trying to be ok with being gay and how tobey helped him grow with that; tobey's fears when he was beaten and how jack supported him to stand up for himself). i didn't like the way the writers decided to end the relationship though with tobey coming back during rush week. (i guess i should go post that in the 'what i would change' thread.) tobey was always so confident and in some instances, more mature. for him to come back and not try to understand where jack was coming from with the whole fraternity thing kind of left me unsatisfied. it seemed somewhat out of character. on the other hand, the same could be said about jack not trying to see tobey's point of view.
the whole teacher thing in the beginning of season 6 was just weird and i wasn't a fan. been there, done that with both pacey and joey. next.
david was kind of cool. but again, i don't really feel like i got to know who he was and what he was about. the whole story didn't really grab me. it was just nice. something the writers gave to jack to keep him busy.
the doug thing i thought was fantastic but because of the same reason - he was always busted on by pacey about favoring the other side and kevin decided to make him ultimately play for that team. classic. i loved jack in the series finale. what a man he grew into. i was ok with the doug/jack relationship and bought it because (again) they were both really there for one other.
so i'm conflicted. i'm not really sure who i would have liked jack to end up with. not ethan. not david. i guess it comes down to tobey or doug. however, i'm a little uneasy about them too because i don't really feel like there was any chemistry. it may be because the actors weren't gay, who knows. but i didn't feel that bond. like with grethen and dawson or jen or dawson or (of course) pacey and joey. my other hand up (as mentioned) was the development of the relationships. i would have like to of seen more to come to a better conclusion. so i've got nothing. i'll go with my original...jen. |
