Episode 8 If You Build It, He Will Come Episode 9 Prose and Cons Episode 10 The Maine Event Episode 11 A Frightening Engagement Episode 12 Reservations As the sun rose over the the Manhattan horizon, Dawson Leery stood on the terrace of his hotel suite. He held a glass of water in his left hand and with the other hand cinched the belt of his hotel-provided terrycloth robe tighter. He appeared to be at peace with the world but inside his head the continual battle raged.......how much would it cost to reshoot the scene with Sandra and Billy on the riverfront, how long until the next round of pre-financing kicks in, what can I do to get the premiere kicked into June instead of February..........the never-ending cycle of stress in the head of a movie producer/director. He smiled inwardly at the thoughts, reflecting on how he was living his dreams, and then sobered because he wasn’t completely fulfilled. Not really. He turns and looks back into the bedroom where he clearly sees the form of his nearly constant companion of the last two months, Nikki Greene. “Who would have ever put the two of us together”, he pondered. Nikki had been his confidante and source of strength for the last two months as well. Never one to be totally possessed by self-confidence, the young woman he had so much admired as a student film maker had been the one who kept his confidence high and his ability to exact demands of the New York and L.A. studios when budget cuts had seemed a certainty and helped him convince Steven to help them force their way through the bottlenecks. As he watched her sleep, he wondered, “What exactly do I feel for her? Do I love her? I know I respect her..........as a friend, as a woman, as a film-maker. I know I care for her, but do I love her?” He knew innately that he’d never had to question this feeling before. Each and every time he had thought he was in love before, there had been no need to question his feelings. Dawson’s head cocked to the right as he heard a knock on the suite’s door. “Room service”, he thought to himself as he headed for the door. “They’ll probably wake Nikki, but it’s about time anyway.” He opened the door and the waiter pushed a cart in with an array of fresh fruit, a covered dish he assumed to be the belgian waffles Nikki loved and somewhere...........he could smell bacon. He tipped the waiter generously, saw him out the door and went back to sample the pineapple. He turned at the rustle of sheets and saw that Nikki was awake and wiping sleep from her eyes. “She really is beautiful,” he thought to himself, but responded aloud with a “Good Morning, Nikki.” She merely made a small grunting noise as she propped herself up on every pillow on the bed, and managed a weak smile. “Good Morning. Something smells good.” “Why don’t I get you a robe and you can come join me. It’s your favorite.” “That’s okay,” Nikki replied. “I’ll just wrap up in this sheet and be right there.” She smiled that perfect smile and did exactly as she said, except for the little dancing skip she executed on the way across the room. “It’s a big day, hon”, she said. Dawson sighed and nodded. “It’s just your father. A man I admire and respect. Why am I so totally scared to meet him........or be introduced to him, rather........as your “whatever I am?” Nikki responded, “Because I don’t know how he will react either. I’ve never crossed this particular line myself.” “Your father is as decent a man as I’ve ever met in my life, Nikki. Surely he’ll...........” Nikki interrupted him with, “But he’s a black man Dawson. He has been all his life and there’s things we don’t understand about other times, other people, other places. Oh, I”m confident he’ll be the picture of civility, but I just don’t know what he won’t want me to know.” Attempting to be lighthearted Dawson said, “Maybe we should meet him in a public place.” Nikki sat and helped herself to waffles and said, “That’s actually not a bad idea.” “I was kidding, Nikki,” Dawson joked. “Your father would never............” Nikki interrupted again.......... “You don’t know him that well Dawson. Never underestimate Howard Green.” “Well, we could invite him to dinner at the Icehouse. He always liked Pacey and Joey.” Nikki finished chewing as she looked Dawson squarely in the eye. “ Are you sure YOU are ready for that? You DO realize Pacey and Joey..........none of your other friends for that matter, know anything about us?” Dawson replied quickly, “Nikki, that’s not because I don’t want them to........it’s timing, and we haven’t been here that much.” “You talk to one of them on the phone virtually every day, Dawson.”she responded. “I know,” he said reassuringly, “It’s just been a little weird. From what they tell me Andie and Gretchen have both been giving off signals to me............” “And you don’t see that?”Nikki grinned. “Actually no,” he said. “I took both of them out a couple of times, but nothing happened.” “They’ve both got monster crushes on you, big guy, and I for one don’t care that we haven’t spent a bunch of time with them.” “As far as Pacey and Joey are concerned,” he started, “I want them to know all about you.” “As far as Pacey and Joey are concerned” she replied, “I know that if they don’t approve, our time is limited at best.” “Nikki, that’s just not true” Dawson quickly responded. “My friends are going to love you.” “When exactly was the last time a new member entered your little clique?” Nikki asked. “They’re not like that Nikki. They’re really not.” he implored. Nikki stood and walked to Dawson’s side, leaned over and kissed him on the cheek and said, “I believe they don’t mean to be..............let’s just wait and see. Okay?” She walked across the room, opened a dresser drawer, removed some things and headed for the bathroom. Dawson watched her the whole way, and worried. “What if she’s right?” Pacey stood in front of the stove watching the progress of three very special omelettes as he fussed about cleaning up after himself. First he rinsed the utensils and bowls he had used and then loaded the dishwasher. He closed the door, opened it again and looked inside, shrugged his shoulders and opened the cabinet where he kept the detergent. After loading the proper amount of detergent, he closed the door and started the dishwasher. He returned to the omelettes checked each carefully and nibbled off a spare piece of bacon sitting on a plate to his right. One by one he took the omelettes off the griddle and placed them just so on a plate. He took the time to garnish the plate, not like he would at the restaurant but enough to make it look special to the sleeping ladies of the house. Just then he heard a noise and turned in time to see Mindy come into the kitchen wearing a man’s shirt............far to big to be his and he frowned momentarily thinking the obvious, before greeting her and saying “Hi, Min. Just in time. How does a nice omelette sound?” “Morning, Pacey. I’m SO tired.”. “You look tired,” he responded. “What time did you get to sleep?” “I see where this is going,” Mindy replied. “Why don’t you like Dennis?” Pacey looked shocked and dismayed and feigned hurt as he said, “What? What did I say?” He continued, “Mindy, I just hate to see you spending every penny you make on phone calls to a boy a couple of hundred miles away. One who you barely know I might add.” “That is NOT FAIR, Pacey”, Mindy started, “I’ve known him since............” “Whoa...........please. STOP!”, Joey pleaded as she walked into the kitchen tying her robe in place. “Pace, I love you. Butt out!” “Thank you, Joey,” Mindy input and was interrupted in turn by Joey. “And YOU young lady............we’re going to have a nice long “Dennis talk” but in the mean time, at least get off the phone early enough to get some sleep. You have a job, you know. A good one too. With an excellent Boss who only wants the best for you.” She sat at the table and Mindy joined her. “What smells good, Pace? I’m starved.” Pacey leaned over her shoulder and placed the omelette on the table and kissed the top of her head, then walked to the other side and place Mindy’s in front of her. “Juice? Milk? Coffee?” Both Mindy and Joey opted for coffee and after serving it Pacey sat down with his breakfast, a large glass and a complete half gallon of orange juice. Joey observed, “Using a glass today?” Mindy giggled and Pacey rolled his eyes. “I’ve had enough criticism for one week,” he answered. “Now, Pace. You know I’m just kidding. I really don’t mind if you..........well, I DO really mind when you drink out of the jug but..........oh just get over it. You know I love you,” she said playfully. They talked as they ate, but Mindy pretty much inhaled her breakfast. Joey noticed and commented. “In a hurry, Min?” As Mindy stood she said, “I’ve got some things to do before work this morning. Same time, Pacey?” “Yes, Mindy. We’ll leave here around 9 am. There’s 3 major conventions in town this week,” he said to Joey, “and we’ve been incredibly busy. Don’t be late, Min,” again addressing the fleeing teenager. “Wow,” he said. “How do you keep up with her?” “It’s not so hard,” Joey said. “She’s a serious young woman. She’s not just a flighty teenager. She’s had to grow up fast and has done so pretty well.............but she’s got almost NO experience with boys. I’m keeping an eye on her and right now, we’re probably lucky, truth be known, that the one she’s interested in is 200 miles away.” Pacey noddedl, “I guess when you put it that way...........”

Chapter 2 Across the city, at 9 am Gretchen Witter was entering the New York Post building. While she never exactly dressed as the typical up and coming business woman, today she wore a business suit as professional as anything she would ever be caught wearing to work. Across her shoulder she carried a garment bag containing the gown she intended to wear to the Broadway opening she was reviewing tonight. This would actually be her first Broadway opening and she was very excited about it. She had done plenty of Off-Broadway events in her brief stint as an entertainment and leisure editor for the Post, but never an actual Broadway play’s opening night. She only got the chance because Fred’s wife had been rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy thus opening up the opportunity for one of the more junior editors to take his place. Most importantly, she knew Dawson was in town and hopefully would be able to use the second ticket that came with the assignment. It had been at least six weeks, maybe even two months since their last date, and she had dated a number of times since, but if she had her way, Dawson would be her escort tonight. She entered and rode the elevator, exiting at her floor and went to her cubicle which served as her office. She sat down, got back up nervously, walked through the maze of desks and cubicles and found her way to the coffee. Pouring a cup, she noticed Paul who she had gone to a Yankee’s game with and waved to him. The coffee was usually too strong so she added cream, milk actually, and three little packets of sugar before turning to walk back to her cubicle. When she got there, she sat the coffee down, pulled her chair out and sat down. She looked at the phone, wiped her hands on her skirt and looked at the phone again. Finally she picked up the handset, and sat it back down. Why was she so nervous? This was Dawson..........Her Dawson. She has no reason to be nervous, she told herself......no reason at all. She reached for the phone and again, doesn’t pick it up. Dawson and Nikki arrived together at Silvercup Studios in their shared cab, but as was their custom, they entered alone. Dawson wondered who they were kidding. He had seen at least three people he worked with in the last week witness them getting out of the cab, but this was Nikki’s place of employment and he could certainly be thoughtful and honor her wishes for concealment. They met one another again at the elevator and exchanged pleasantries before stepping on and riding to the top floor together. Dawson stepped off and said, “I’ll talk to you later.” and turned left toward his borrowed office. Nikki turned right toward her office and stopped to talk to her assistant. Dawson admired the way she carried herself, the air of confidence and authority she exuded. He entered his office and as he did, his phone began to ring. Walking briskly across the modestly decorated office he sat and picked up the handset from the cradle. “Dawson Leery,” he answered. “Dawson........Pacey. How are you, man? I got your message when I came in. What can I do for you?” “Hi, Pacey. I actually just walked in the door. I called you from my cab on the way in. I need to set something up with you and Joey. First, I need to make reservations for five at the Icehouse.” “Anytime, big Hollywood producer..........I can squeeze you in anytime.” “That’s not all, Pace. I want you and Joey to join us so the night is open for a night that the two of you are free. It’ll be three of us and the two of you.” “Is everything alright, Dawson? This sounds a little mysterious.” Dawson laughed quietly and replied, “Yeah, Pace. Everything’s great. I’ve been seeing this woman for awhile now and I want you to meet her. And, her father will be joining us.” “Her father??? Is this getting serious, Dawson?” Pacey prodded. “No,” Dawson responded, “Not like that anyway. She just wants me to get to know him and I want her to get to know my two best friends.” “Well, as it happens, I’m free tonight after 8pm and Joey’s basically free all the time now that she’s working at home. And the reservations for tonight don’t present a problem either.” “Okay, Pacey,” Dawson said, “Go ahead and set it up for 8:30. Let me know as early as possible if there’s a problem with Joey or anything else.” Pacey replied, “I will, Dawson. You have my word. I’ll see you tonight, and thanks for the invitation.” “My pleasure, Pace. See you both tonight.” Now the hard part, Dawson thought to himself. Nikki has to get her father to go. He picked up the handset and waited for his assistant to answer. “Yeah,” he said. “Can you tell Nikki our meeting is on for tonight. Thanks.” Joey sat in front of the computer typing away. Most days she deleted more than she kept, but she had several ideas started and knew that it was just a matter of time before one of them actually clicked. She felt like she was on the right track and was excited to get up every day and write. Today she had some final notes to make on a self-help book before sending it back by messenger this afternoon, but other than that, her day was free to write and enjoy anyway she chose. She pushed her chair back, rose and went to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. She had never been a big coffee drinker but Mindy sure knew how to brew a good cup. The phone rang just to her right and she jumped and then with a smile and picked it up. “Hello.” “Hi, Jo. Busy?” “Not really. Doing a little writing...........just got up for a cup of coffee. How is the restaurant business today?” “Same old stuff. It should be a good day. We’re booked solid tonight. I had to pull a few strings for a special request tonight. Are you busy? Any plans I don’t know about?” “Not a thing, Pace,” she answered. “Something special involving me?” “Yeah, actually,” he replied. “Dawson called to make reservations for five. You, me, his new girlfriend and her father.” “What? Did you say girlfriend and her father?” “I did indeed, babe,” he replied. “Apparently our boy has himself a steady girl. He wants us to meet her...........the old stamp of approval thing, it seems...........and her father wants to get to know him. Anyway, I said we could make it. Do you see any problems?” “No, I can make it. Are you off tonight?” “Yes,” he replied. “But I am working until 7 or 7:30. Do you think you can meet me here and bring me a change of clothes? The reservation is for 8:30.” “Sure, no problem,” Joey replied. “Isn’t this going to be awkward for him. I know Dawson is doing exactly what you say if he’s inviting us........the whole stamp of approval thing. This is important to him. Why would he do it the same night as he tries to impress her father?” “He probably wants to use you to distract her father,” Pacey laughed. “It’s been done before.” “Sweet talker,” Joey chided. “Flattery gets you no where.” “I know. Believe me, I know,” Pacey smiled. “I’ve got to get back to work, Jo. I’ll see you tonight, if we don’t talk later. Love you.” “Love you too, Pacey. Bye.” Joey hung up the receiver and walked back to her desk. She sat down and bit her lip, thinking about what this could all mean
