Chapter 3
Alex is unpacking her suitcase in the room she shares with Dawn. She hears a voice in the hall, which is strange because everybody’s’ gone to the beach. She grabs the cordless phone from her room and goes into the bathroom and locks the door. Then she listens to the person talking on the phone.
Voice: Look, Chrissie, I’m sorry OK?
(Alex gasps and whispers, “Neil?”)
Neil: What?
Chrissie: (has an American accent) I didn’t say anything.
Neil: Look, I guess you thought that I was coming over to be with you, but it’s different now.
Chrissie : Oh. I see
Neil: You do?
Chrissie: you got a girl back home didn’t you? Your very own Joey.
Neil: Don’t do that.
Chrissie: (sounds like she’s crying) What?
Neil: Use who I am against me. Chris, I really did love you. I just can’t do it.
Chrissie: (sniffs and breathes deeply) (quietly) What’s her name?
Neil: You wanna know?
Chrissie: Of course I don’t Neil. I wanna know why after 3 years of us being together, and only 4 months of me coming back to live out here again you’ve suddenly decided to visit; then phone saying “oh hi Chris, how’s the weather? I’m actually in town for a few days, could ya recommend a good club? Oh yeah and by the way I never want to see or hear from you again.”
Neil: I… I can’t explain.
Chrissie: (sounding cold and harsh) Try.
Neil: but…
Chrissie: Go on, give it a shot.
Neil: (sighs) It’s the butterflies Chris.
Chrissie: What?
Neil: When we met I thought they’d never go away. I took one look at you and decided there and then to love you. But I’m not dumb. A guy answers your phone, and calls you ‘sexy’ when he passes you the phone. I was hurt by that, and then I realised that I simply don’t care anymore. Ok? I just don’t gave a damn. And I’m not just saying it. I don’t even know you anymore Chris.
Chrissie: (is crying by now) I’m sorry!
Neil: (sighs) me too. (hangs up)
(Alex hangs up too, and drops the phone in shock)
Alex: (whispers) Oh my gosh… |

| Chapter 4
Alex, Dawn and Max are playing volleyball at the beach. Neil is talking to a pretty blonde girl in whispers under a sun umbrella.
Alex: (serves the ball over to Dawn) It’s so strange…
Dawn: What is? Volleyball?
(Max rescues the ball from where Dawn failed to catch it. He serves it and it hits a young boy on the head. Max and the boy go off to play by themselves)
Alex: I overheard something this morning.
Dawn: Care to elaborate hun? I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Alex: Well, (looks kinda awkward)… remember when we planned this trip and your brother insisted we stay a few days here before moving on to Wilmington?
Dawn: Of course (rolls eyes) he wants to stay away from Creekland as long as possible.
Alex: Uh huh. That’s what he wanted you to think. He has a girl here Dee.
Dawn: (laughs) Of course he does.
Alex: I’m serious! I heard him breaking up with her on the phone!
Dawn: (looks surprised) Neil broke up with Christina?
Alex: (sits down on the sand) You knew about her?
Dawn: Look, Al, they dated for 3 years. She moved out here 4 months ago. Last month they suddenly stopped calling each other. They have a history, you know?
(They sit in silence for a while)
Does it bother you?
Alex: (speaks really fast) NO! (pauses) Well, it’s just that I don’t want our holiday ruined by your brother’s misguided love affairs.
Dawn: (laughs) Not gonna be a problem.
Neil and Chrissie are sitting under an umbrella.
Chrissie: Is that her?
Neil: (looks confused) who?
Chrissie: The girl you’re staring at.
Neil: (sighs) Chris, this isn’t about me. It’s about you kissing another guy.
Chrissie: Well, uh, not just…
Neil: (interrupts) Ok, too much information, alright? This is about you sleeping with another guy.
Chrissie: Neil, I was in a new town. I was drunk, I wanted to forget about you…for just one night. It meant nothing!
Neil: If it meant nothing, why didn’t you tell me?
Chrissie: Look Neil, long-distance relationships are built on trust. If I told you, we’d have no relationship!
Neil: (angry) Well, guess what Chris, we have no relationship now! And don’t you Dare pretend to me that you know all about long distance relationships. If you were such an expert on them you wouldn’t have screwed ours up! (leaves Chrissie alone on the sand. Alex watches him go and runs after him) |
