Chapter 6
Gretchen is sitting on the couch in the hotel room, when she hears the phone ring. Hello. Hey, how are you, the voice on the other end proclaims in a soft but rugged response. Oh my god are the first words out of Gretchen’s mouth. Dawson? Yeah Gretch. It’s me. I’m impressed, he says. How long has it been since we last talked. Seven years maybe.? That’s pretty good voice recognition for seven years.
Well, some people, with their voices and their looks, you just never forget, Gretchen replies while smiling as she remembers this incredibly handsome blonde boy. So how did you know where I was Dawson?. Well Iets just say I know people. Gretchen rolls her eyes because she now knows Pacey must have talked to him.Well your right , it’s been way to long wouldn’t you say Gretchen. A smile crosses her face. Yeah, it has been way to long. So do you think you might have some time in the near future for a cup of coffee Gretch? Um…yeah, it would be great to see you. Will you be in Boston any time soon. Um, not real soon. Oh Gretchen replies that’s to bad. Yeah Dawson replies.
Gretchen then hears a knock on the door..Dawson hold on one minute I have to answer the door. No problem Dawson replies. Gretchen puts down the phone and goes to the door, and opens it. Her mouth drops and she is speechless for a moment...Dawson!
After looking at her schedule Joey picks up the phone and starts dialing. Hello is Charlie there? It’s Joey Potter. After a few seconds she hears Charlies voice. Hi Charlie, I just checked and I could meet you on Friday for lunch? Would you mind meeting me here at my office? Ok great, see you about 12:30. Does Cassandra have any particular favorite cuisine. Oh she’s not? Oh I see.. Well what about you? Oh ok, well then I’ll see you then.
Hey thanks for calling..Bye.
Jack is sitting at the table with Amy and Grams, when Doug walks in. Hey, Jack says as Doug takes off his gun belt and hangs it up. Hey how you guys doing. Good Jack replies as he feeds Amy some cut up bananas. Grams is sitting working on some needlepoint, when Doug brings a couple of bags over to the table with some food he picked up for them for lunch. So what was up with Pacey, Jack asks?
Well, he wanted to discuss his plans for the future of the Ice House. What do you mean Doug? He’s going to be leaving Capeside.. Ah, I see. Going to New York? Yeah.
So what’s the plan for the Ice House. The plan is Doug replies, that Bodie is going to run the restaurant while he’s gone. So he’s planning on coming back soon? I don’t know?
So how do you feel about all this Doug? Which part ? All of it.. I’m just thankful Bodie is going to handle The Ice House, and I’m hoping Pacey and Joey will figure out their future for their sake. Yeah I know what you mean. Don’t worry about Pacey and Joey Grams chimes in. They are going to figure out their future in short order..What makes you so sure Doug says. Well, while you were on patrol, and Jack was at work today, I got a call from Pacey. Oh really Doug says. Yes, Grams replies. What did he have to say?
He asked me for some advise. Both Jack and Doug look at each other and smile and then turn to Grams.
Dawson and Gretchen are sitting in a sidewalk café sipping on a couple of latte’s when Gretchen smiles and says. I hope you don’t mind my directness when I tell you your even more handsome then I had remembered. Dawson can only blush and smile back.
Thank you. God Gretch, I can’t tell you how great it is to see you. I’ve missed you.
Forgive me for my directness, but I need to ask you a question straight up. What’s that? She says. Do you have a significant other? Well about a year ago, I was dating this guy who worked at the restaurant, but then he moved to Chicago, so that was the end of that. So no, I’m not currently in a serious relationship. Good says Dawson, because I want to know if we can have another shot? All the junk about our age difference is meaningless now, and the elements of our character which bonded before and found love between us, never left me Gretch. You’re the person who inspired me to be the best I could be, and who I learned so much from. I believe if you give me a chance I can do much of that for you. Gretchen takes a sip of her drink, then reaches out for Dawson hand. Truth is Dawson, you did inspire me already. When we got together before. You started our relationship with a letter. Dawson smiles at Gretchen, then takes her hand and kisses it softly. So where do we go from here Dawson? Well we can always go back to the hotel and you know talk so more. Talk? Or?
Back at the Ice House, Pacey is sitting with Bodie at the bar after a long day, sipping on ice tea. So Bodie, any final thoughts on what we did today? No I’m good. Pacey reviews a list that he made for himself to cover with Bodie. Ok, so you’ve met all the members of the staff, and you have the list of the vendors, and technical support for all the cooking equipment. Pacey is really just thinking out loud at this point.
Ok then lets get out of here. Pacey hands the keys to Bodie to lock up and as they are walking to the parking lot, Pacey turns around a takes a last look at the Ice House. Don’t worry Pacey, I’ll take good care of her. Pacey shakes his head at Bodies comment, and laughs. I was just thinking Bod, I use to come here with Joey and Dawson, when it was Mikes place, and you and Bessie and Joey ran it. I feel like I’ve simply resurrected what was already yours, you know.
No Pacey, what you did was right a ship that went off coarse a long time ago. You had to find your niche in the world, and as hard a road as you have taken, and as much weight as you have carried on your back, your going down the right road now, with your heart and your life. The only question now, is what are you going to do next?
What are you asking me man? Pacey says laughing..I’m asking you if you really have a plan for you and Joey? Pacey bites his lower lip, and sticks his hand in his pocket. He pulls it out with a piece of paper and looks at it. It’s a receipt which he shows to Bodie.
Does this answer your question? Yes it Does Pace, Yes it does!
Joey is in the elevator. 4,5,6,7. The doors open and she walks down the corridor. Her heart is now starting to pound. She puts her key into the lock and turns the knob. The switches on the light to reveal a cold atmostphere that is her apartment. It’s quite and everything is just about how she recalls leaving it the week before. She sees a card on the table, but walks past it to look at the rest of the apartment. As she enters the bedroom again she hits the light and again sees a clean room, with no evidence of human activity. She then goes back into the living room, and heads for the table with the envelope. It says Joey on the front. She opens it to find a note, and a key. She reads the note. Dear Joey, I guess it’s better that you figured out what you wanted before we invested more time into us. I hope you find the happiness that your looking for.
I wish you well. Love Chris. Joey’s heart slows down, and she feels a sense of relief come over her, knowing that things are working out as she had hoped. Now there was just one more detail she needed to really feel complete. Pacey..
Chapter 7
I look up at the clock as I hear the phone ringing. It’s 7pm. Hello. Hey Joey it’s me. Oh hey Gretchen, how are you. I’m good. Did you talk to Pacey yet. Yeah he called me this morning at work. So what the plan Joey. Well he said he’ll be here Saturday. That he’s worked it out with Bodie and Doug to take care of the Ice house for a while. I’m really glad to hear that Joey. Are you feeling better. Well getting back to the office today, and catching up a little bit, calmed my nerves a little, and then I was really stressing before I got back here, but I found a really nice note from Christopher and felt a little more at ease. I But I just know I will feel so much better when I’m in Pacey’s arms. I need him so much Gretch. Just like he needs you Joey. I hope so. Trust me Joey, I know so.
So have you had dinner? Gretchen is laughing on the phone as she talking to Joey.
Gretchen, what’s so funny. Um well, Stop it she wispers away from the phone. Now Joey gets suspicious. Gretchen what’s going on? Joey hold on just a minute. Gretchen covers the phone. Dawson stop she says. Dawson is kissing Gretchen neck as she’s talking to Joey. Gretchen pushes him away and Dawson just has a huge smile on his face. Then he walks away into the bathroom.
Gretchen then returns to talk to Joey. Sorry about that. Sorry about what, what’s going on? Well I have a guest here. Suddenly Joey’s starts smirking. Well does this guest have a name or am I getting too personal. Well Joey, you know his name. I do? Yeah you do.
Tell you what, why don’t you come to the hotel for dinner and you can meet my mystery guest. Ok I need to change so I’ll be the in about 45. Great we’ll see you then.
Back at his apartment, Pacey’s packing up the last of his things, before sacking out for the night. His stomach is churning with butterflies, as he agonizes over one more night before he can be with her again. So far everything was going according to plan. He was going to surprise Joey, by showing up a day earlier than she expected, and see what the great city of New York was all about. The uncertainty of the future was in fact a scary proposition, but he was back with the love of his life. With all the crap that he had to deal with: making the biggest mistake of his life, when he broke up with her in high school, he really was counting his blessings now, that nothing was going to get in his way of loving Joey for the rest of his life. He would have the strength of her love for him, without a shadow of a doubt, that he was good enough, in fact he could be even proud of himself for making something of himself, that she could be proud of. Now was time for action.
Joey walked into the lobby of the hotel, and made her way to the escalator to the second floor where the restaurant was located. She couldn’t help but notice the marble elegance of the walls and floors. It reminded her of some of the painting she had done in the past, and started thinking about someday she would paint again. She felt the inspiration of love in her heart and the desire to express it. Getting to the second floor she turned and headed for the dining room, and as she walked in looking for Gretchen, she noticed the familiar blond boy, whom Gretchen said she would know. His back was turned to her, but Gretchen saw Joey and waived. Right then Dawson turned around to his friend.
As she got to the table, Dawson stands up to greet her. Surprise. Hey you Joey says with a crooked smile. Joey sits down in the seat across from Gretchen. We ordered some drinks. Do you want anything? Just Ice tea actually. So Dawson, when did you get here. Actually this morning and I have to leave for LA first thing . I just came in to find this lovely lady and do some catching up. No offense Jo. Well that explains why you didn’t mention anything to me about coming to town. It was sort of last minute Joey. Last minute huh?
After dinner Joey, Dawson and Gretchen made their way over to the lounge area of the hotel by the fire, to have coffee and visit a few more minutes before Joey was going to head home. So are you set for your interview Gretch. Well actually I’ve postponed it. Really, why? Dawson looks at Gretchen with a shocked look on his face, after hearing that she was interviewing for a job in New York. What happened to your other job. Nothing it’s still there. So your going back to Boston? No not yet. Joey and Dawson look at each other and both have a confused look on their face. Gretchen who is sitting right next to Dawson looks directly into his eyes. I’m leaving on Saturday for L.A. Dawson can only smile.
Joey looks at her watch and stands up. Well on that note, I think I’m going to say goodnight. Both Gretchen and Dawson stand up as well, We’ll walk you back says Dawson. Ok.
They all get to Joey’s apartment. Hey you have a great place Jo. Thanks Dawson.
Well it was good to see you. And thanks for all the encouragement and support. What are you talking about Dawson. These last few weeks, have been quite a wirlwind. I really didn’t know what was going to happen with seeing you and loosing Jen. But I’m glad we were able to finally comes to terms with your feelings about us and Pacey, because it helped me make up my mind to find Gretchen. Gretchen and Dawson are holding hands and he lifts their hands to kiss hers. Me to Dawson, me too. Dawson and Joey give each other huge hugs and just stand there holding on to each other for a moment. I’ll talk to you soon Joey. Joey nods her head and smiles. I’ll see ya Dawson.
So about that sightseeing date tomorrow Joey? Yeah Gretch, I’ll be able to meet up with you around 4pm. I have a meeting with a new client that just came up in the morning, then I’m going to meet Charlie for lunch, then, work a little bit before calling it a day, so I’ll call you in the afternoon. Ok talk to you then. As they walk around the couch in the living room, they both notice the view of the New York skyline. Man, I can see why you live here. Dawson looks out the window and points. Is that Central Park? Yeah, and over there is Grennich Village. That figures Joey, Gretchen says with a smirk. Excuse me?
O come on, you know that you had to be close to the artsy fartsy’s right. Well I never thought about it, but I guess maybe subconsciously your right. We’ll go experience that tomorrow..Deal.
Joey walks to the door, and gives Dawson one final hug. As they leave, she locks the door, and looks at the clock. 11:45pm. She heads for the bedroom, and starts thinking.
She picks up the phone, dials the number and waits. There no answer, then the machine picks up. So I hope you had a good day honey; it’s late and I just got back from visiting with Gretchen and Dawson. Anyway call me in the morning when you wake up. I love you, Bye. Figuring he’s probably asleep she heads for bed herself.
So I never even asked you where you were staying tonight Dawson. Well, I really didn’t make a reservation. And why is that? Just decided to fly by the seats of my pants on this one. Got any suggestions? He wiggles his eye brows. Yeah the sofa in the room is quite the goose down. You’ll sleep like a baby. Is that a fact? That’s the fact Jack. So that’s how it’s going to be Jill?.
Well I believe in the merit system. Are you prepared to earn some merit to make other arrangements? That depends on if the merit system will have some lucrative rewards.
There is only one way to find out Dawson, and the meters running.
As the alarm sounds, Joey groggily opens her eyes. She looks over at the clock and sees that it’s 6:30am. Ok it’s friday morning, just get through this day, she thinks to herself. She gets out of bed and heads for the kitchen to get the coffee going. Then she picks up the phone, dials and waits. Two, three, four rings, and then the machine.
Hey Pace, are you there? Pick up, I really need to talk to you. Pacey? No answer from him on the other end. She hangs up, and then dials another number.
Hello, a groggy voice answers. Jack, it’s me Joey. Jack looks over at the clock, and realizes it’s 6:45am. Joey, what’s wrong. Nothing I think. Is Doug there? Yeah, just a minute. Jack wakes up Doug, hey Joey’s on the phone. Jack hands Doug the phone.
Hey Joey, what going on. Doug have you talked to Pacey since yesterday morning. Um no but he was busy getting ready to leave. Actually come to think of it he said something about him and Bodie needing to go to the bank for some paperwork today, but that wouldn’t be till at least nine. Why? Well, I called the apartment last night, and he didn’t answer. I know it was late, but he usually does pick up even when he’s in bed, when he hears my voice. He doesn’t sleep that soundly. I left a message to call me this morning, but I have not heard from him. So I called, but still no answer. All the while, Doug knew exactly why Pacey didn’t answer but he couldn’t tell Joey. Joey, maybe he was just in the bathroom, when you called. Try him again ok. Ok I will. Thanks. Call me back if you don’t get him, and I’ll check on him ok. Ok thanks. Joey hung up the phone. Ok I’ll wait a few minutes then try again.
She goes to the door opens it and grabs the paper. She sits down to start reading it while having coffee and a piece of toast. Suddenly the phone rings, It makes her jump not realizing how tense she realy is over not hearing from Pacey. Thank god, she says to herself. Hello, Joey, Karl?, Yes good morning. Good morning, what’s going on? Joey, we have a situation that I need your help with. Sounds serious. Well the deal is that we have a big fish on the line. Ok, and? And we need to put in a bid to publish this one writer because this could be a multi million dollar. So I need you, my number one critic to do and audit of the work before I put in the bid. So I need to send you to his home in Miami, where he has all the work. He can’t just Fedex a copy to us. More like he won’t!
Well ok, when do I have to go. Funny you should ask. I have you booked on the 9am flight tomorrow. Tomorrow!, Karl your kidding right. I know this is last minute Joey, but this assignment if we get it is going to be big dollars in your pocket as well as ours.
Joey’s heart sank into the pit of her stomach. I understand. Thanks Joey, I knew you would. See you in a little while. Don’t forget about the 9:00 new client. No I wouldn’t dare forget. Bye Karl.
Tears just started to run down Joey’s face as all she could think about at that moment was how long she had been waiting to see Pacey, and now it would be even longer. This was good news but it crushed her heart at the same time. In the meantime it had been another 20 minutes and still no call from him. Her call waiting had not indicated a call coming in. She dialed the number again. Again no answer. Now her stress level was reaching maximum capacity.
Now she was worried. She was now going to call Doug back. Hello, Doug it’s me again.
No luck huh. No. Ok Joey don’t worry, I’ll check on him and call you as soon as I find him. Where can I reach you;.on my cell phone. I have it with me. Ok Joey, relax, everything will be ok.
After getting off the phone with Joey, Doug starts laughing. Man he’s going to give her a heart attack. So Doug, you know where Pacey is. Yeah Jack, I know where he is. Care to enlighten me. All in do time my good man. All in good time.
At the airport, Dawson was checking in for his flight to L.A. and talking on his cell phone to Gretchen. So call my office when you land and I’ll come get you. I would say call me cell phone but you will probably get the voice mail. I have three separate meetings scheduled so I won’t be qable to talk to you until after. Sounds good. See you tomorrow night Gretch.. You will definitely see me tomorrow night. You mean I actually built up enough merit points. And then some handsome man.
Joey walked into her office, put her purse and work bag down, checked her cell phone again, but there was no messages indicated and the phone had not rung all morning. Trying to stay come, she looked at her watch. It was 8:45am. She then decided to take a moment to go over the notes she had been given regarding the new client.
She then looked in her in box, and noticed two messages. One was from Charlie, and the other was from Karl. The note from Karl asked her to set up the standard introduction slide show in the conference room to help explain to the new client how the process works, and to meet him in there at 9:00 sharp. While taking deep breaths to keep herself from shaking she started looking through her disk files the appropriate powerpoint presentation. Finally finding it, she then proceeded down the hall to the conference room. She opened the door and turned on the lights. It was dead quite in the room. She proceeded to turn on the computer and prepare the presentation. She the grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down. A minute later, the door opened and Karl walked in. Good morning again Joey. Good morning Karl. Thank you so much for doing the intro this morning. Your welcome Karl. Where’s the client. He’ll be right in, I just wanted to check and see if we were ready for the meeting. All set Joey replied. Karl then proceeded to open the door, I’ll be right back. Now Joey was just sitting there in silence with nothing but Pacey on her mind. She would just have to do her best with this client. She had done this intro 100 times. She just needed to calm her nerves. She started to look at the outline of the slides and didn’t even hear the door open. The two men walked in. Joey, I’d like to introduce you to this gentleman. As she heard Karl’s voice she looked up from the computer. As soon as she saw his face, the loudest scream Karl had ever heard came out of Joey’s mouth. Oh my god!!! She yelled Oh my god!! Both Her hands covered her mouth as she jumped up out of the chair. Hello Miss Potter, he proclaimed!
Tears started rolling down both hers and his eyes as she raced around the table to jump into his arms. Karl could only smile as he quietly exited the room.
Oh my god ,I love you Pace, she whispered into his neck as her heart racing a thousand beats per minute and holding him for dear life. I love you too Potter. Surprise!
You had me worried sick Pacey. I called you last night and again this morning, and there was no answer. I know, I’m sorry about that. I caught the red eye last night, because I wanted to surprise you by coming a day earlier than I told you and I couldn’t sleep. How did you know. Doug called me this morning. He asked if he should call you back and I told him no, that I would be over there shortly. Oh Pace I missed you so much. Me too Potter, I just couldn’t wait to see you. May I kiss you now. A huge smile on Joey’s face replacing the tears of joy. Yes please Pacey replies. There lips meet gently, passionately, then Joey realizes she’s at work and pulls away Wait, Pacey, She looks over to where Karl was standing. We can’t do this here. We have a client that meeting us now.
Let me guess Jo, 9:00am meeting? Yeah. Joey I am the client. What are you talking about. Come with me Josephine Potter. They both exit the room and walk into Karl’s office. Mr. Hogue, I want to thank you for allowing my to surprise my girlfriend and showing up at your office to pull of our little reunion. Your quite welcome. Karl you knew about this? Had no clue Joey he says with a half smile. Mr. Witter called a couple of days ago, and told me what his plans were. Please, call me Pacey. Sure Pacey, and you can call me Karl.
So there was no new client this morning. Karl just shakes his head. So I hear Pacey’s never been to our fair city. Well only from the water anyway, pacey recollects.
Joey, I can tell you need a little time, why don’t you show Pacey the library and relax for a little bit. I don’t think were behind schedule on any pubs. Yeah, I think I need a little a few minutes. Take your time Joey. Thanks Karl. It was nice to meet you Pacey. Karl the pleasure is mine. Thanks again for your help.
Grabbing Pacey’s hand and intertwinding their fingers, they walk out of Karl’s office to head for the library. Joey knew exactly why Karl had suggested showing Pacey the Library. |
