| Alright, so I was watching an episode of The Tyra Banks Show yesterday and I saw two teenage girls, 17 years old. Both girls had children in high school and were blaming teen soap shows for their poor choices. Claiming that those types of shows present teens who party and have a good time by drinking and having lots of unprotected sex which in turn made them think it was normal and it's how they should behave. The girls even said that their own parents spoke to them about these issues but didn't listen, instead they took their role models on behavior from teenage dramas. Each girl was adamant that if they never saw those types of shows they never would have even considered behaving in ways that they did. Shows they mentioned were Gossip Girl and others. While Gossip Girl is breaking the mold and I agree it is much too risque for television, I don't agree that those shows are responsible.
Thankfully, Tyra pointed out, just because the shows don't always show men using condoms or even pointing out the consequences of their actions, many teen shows do show the negative sides of some of these "typical" teen actions. I was appalled and could not believe these girls were actually blaming their own poor choices on the fact that they watched those shows. For one, they could choose not to watch. Two, they can listen to those voices of people who speak to them on the subject. Finally of course, they can think about their decisions before they act. In today's world, there is no way that a 17 year old does not know the affects of sex and drug or alcohol abuse. Even if they don't, they can find people to talk to about making decisions like that.
So since our beloved DC is a teen soap, that I believe talked about sex TONS but in a responsible way, I wonder what you all think?? |
