From the NY Times Five Knockouts in the Battle of the Sexes [b:2305b4e5d1](extract)[/b:2305b4e5d1] By KAREN DURBIN Published: November 6, 2005 Michelle Williams MICHELLE WILLIAMS, who did a fine screwball turn in this summer's "The Baxter," first displayed her comic gifts while still a teenager in "Dick" (1999), in which she and Kirsten Dunst stumble upon the Watergate scandal and end up being Deep Throat. But except for "Me Without You," a little-seen British film that came out two years later, Ms. Williams hasn't had much of a chance to show what a first-rate dramatic actress she is. Kudos to Ang Lee for casting her as Heath Ledger's wife, Alma, in "Brokeback Mountain" (Dec. 9), which features Mr. Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as, respectively, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, young cowboys who violate the macho codes of the American West by falling in love with each other. Alma is young and probably not a whole lot more educated than her hard-working high-school-dropout husband. But as Ms. Williams makes clear, that doesn't mean she's clueless. Alma discovers the passion between Ennis and Jack in the most jarring way when, from her kitchen window, she sees them in a headlong, desperate kiss. But instead of registering her shock with wide-eyed gasps of horror, Ms. Williams does something subtler and more eloquent: she goes perfectly still, taking in the painful knowledge that, we realize, as her mouth crumples and her eyes fill with tears, was already there just below the surface of her conscious mind. The scene recalls an earlier one of Ennis making love to his wife; he's tender, but at the critical moment, he turns her over and, eyes closed, takes her from behind. Ms. Williams is eloquent then, too; she looks confused and a little hurt. But she doesn't say anything and is slow to confront him later. Ms. Williams's Alma is a good wife and, like Ennis, a person of modest hopes. She loves her husband, and for a time at least, she knows enough not to ask for what she cannot have.

Julija, I've seen most of her movies now including Prozac nation. In most cases, the movies are OK,not great, but there simply is not enough of Michelle in them. Best so far are "The Station Agent," "Dick," and "Imaginary Heroes" in that order. She was very good and prominant in "The Baxter," but did not think the movie was that good. Please let me know what you think of "Land of Plenty" have not seen it yet. It has not been shown much in the US. Chuck

I really want to see Brokeback now...that sounds so interesting. Something unexpected for a western.

oh Chuck you are going to love Land of Plenty.. there's tons of Michelle in it and she looks so cute with the short black hair [img:30cd6894fb]http://www.phillyfests.com/pff/press/Land%20of%20Plenty/05.jpg[/img:30cd6894fb] the film is smart and funny and unique like all Wim Wenders films. he really does have an interesting view on the us after 9/11. I'm curious to how you guys would see it. you won't like it if you're not an independent film fan, though.
